Jennifer Swan: “Leicester College was the best college I have ever attended”

Jennifer Swan“Leicester College was the best college I have ever attended,” said Jennifer Swan.  “I wish I had spent more years there. As a student with a disability I was supported well by all my tutors throughout all of my courses. Any time I needed help I received it and my tutors became my friends.”

Jennifer studied BTEC Level 3 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Leicester College and was awarded the Inspirational Student Journey Award and the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy Student of the Year Award during her time here.

Jennifer spoke to our Alumni Team about studying with the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.

“The course helped me to prepare to set up my own business,” she said. “I started with a business idea, which was cupcakes, particularly catering for those people with allergies to normal cupcake ingredients. Based on this idea I learnt how to write a business plan and the best ways to get finance. I also learnt several marketing techniques to get the best out of the business and also learnt about recruiting staff and the laws that apply when running and setting up a business.”

Personally my time at the academy also boosted my confidence through teamwork and the support of our Business Enterprise Managers Louise Jones and Rupinder Drew.

She also told us about the extra-curricular activities available to her during her time at Leicester College.

“I got to go to several different places and learn from business experts and meeting Peter Jones (not once but twice) was a particular highlight,” she said.

“We would go on trips out to Sheffield for the Made Festival, which featured a variety of entrepreneurs including Levi Roots and also visited the Spring Fair at the NEC in Birmingham to listen to a number of guest speakers. Some were local businessmen and women and some were former academy students. I got to help out at Question of Brains, a fundraising event for STEPS, which is a charity that helps families who have children with special needs.

“The year ended with a trip to London to attend a graduation ceremony where we were presented with our certificates by Peter Jones himself (a highlight of the year).”
